VMware outlines path to net zero by 2030
VMware announced Dec. 10 its new 2030 sustainability agenda, which includes 30 specific goals around its ESG targets including net zero emissions and 100% renewable energy sourcing.
Over the next ten years, the software company plans to collaborate with its public cloud partners in order to achieve this net zero target. Additionally, is targeting a significant increase in workload carbon efficiency in its customers’ digital operations.
“This year has created an even greater sense of urgency to take action on global and societal challenges so we’ve set bold goals that are core to our business and will have significant impact,” VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said in a statement. “In many ways, digital transformation is the backbone to building a better world. It not only creates a resilient global healthcare system, but also helps us overcome the digital divide and decarbonizes the planet. At VMware, we’re committed to building technology on a foundation of digital ethics that serves all stakeholders. We will work with our ecosystem to redefine what it means to be a force for good.”
VMware is targeting a 50% reduction in its own emissions from a 2018 baseline while it achieves net zero emissions within its operations and supply chain. To accomplish this, the company plans to work directly with 75% of its suppliers by spend to help reduce their emissions through the establishment of science-based targets by 2024.
Moving forward, the company also intends to increase its investment in research into the development of sustainable digital infrastructure.
