Etsy pledges net-zero carbon emissions by 2030
Etsy announced on Feb. 24 that it is deepening its commitment to a sustainable future with a new goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.
Its reduction objectives will follow the protocol of the Science Based Targets Initiative and include a 50% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 13.5% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions. In defining this goal, Etsy set out to cast the widest net possible to ensure reducing both direct and indirect carbon impact. This is why it’s addressing not only Scope 1 and 2 emissions, including office operations and purchased energy, but also Scope 3 emissions, which include seller activities like shipping and packaging.
“At Etsy, we’ve always been conscious of our ecological footprint,” Etsy’s Chief Executive Officer Josh Silverman said in a statement. “We’ve long held ourselves to ambitious goals, from powering our marketplace with 100% renewable electricity to running zero waste operations globally. And when we became the first ecommerce company to offset carbon emissions from shipping in early 2019, we emphasized that it was an important milestone, but not the end of our sustainability journey. Climate change remains an ever-present threat to our environment and humanity, and we are bound and determined to do everything within our power to not only continue to be a carbon-neutral company but to also drive reductions in our overall footprint.”
Alongside Etsy’s current actions to lessen its carbon footprint, it will be increasing its focus on working with sustainable vendors and suppliers, furthering advocacy for the decarbonization of the logistics and transportation sector, and addressing opportunities for cleaner fulfillment.
