General Mills Announces New Emissions Reduction Goals
Aligning with new SBTI guidelines, General Mills shared both its recent achievements and its updated emissions and energy efficiency goals with the release of its 2021 Global Responsibility Report. Having already lowered its value chain’s GHG emissions by 16% (compared to 2010) and sustainably sourced all of its top 10 ingredients, the food brand is now committing to a 30% reduction by 2030 and full carbon neutrality by 2050. This new commitment has a baseline of 2020 and accelerates the company’s previous goal (41-72% reduction by 2050).
The company’s latest Global Responsibility Repo chronicles its social and environmental progress through May 31, 2020, in addition to future goals. To accomplish its current 100% sustainable top 10 ingredient list and 16% emissions reduction, the company focused on choosing less GHG-intensive ingredients and more energy-efficient manufacturing and transportation methods.
“Our business is rooted in the earth and in order to make food for future generations, we believe we can no longer simply sustain earth’s resources, we need to regenerate them,” said Mary Jane Melendez, chief sustainability and social impact officer, in a statement. “In the past year, we accelerated farmer adoption of regenerative agriculture practices on more than 70,000 acres in key regions where we source ingredients – getting us closer to our 1 million acres commitment by 2030 – and measured positive environmental, social and economic outcomes.”
