Tata Consultancy Unveils 2030 Carbon Neutrality Strategy

Tata Consultancy Services is targeting net zero emissions by 2030, with interim goals of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 70% by 2025 from a 2016 baseline.

The announcement comes following the IT consulting company’s success in achieving its previous target of reducing its carbon footprint by half by 2020. In 2021, TCS’s specific carbon footprint from Scope 1 and 2 emissions was 61.6% lower than a 2008 baseline.

Much of the company’s emissions reduction was due to the fact that over 97% of employees were working from home in FY2021, reducing resource consumption and emissions. TCS’s energy consumption dropped 46.6% compared to the previous year, and Scope 1 and 2 emissions dropped 48.8%.

“Our net zero goal underlines our renewed commitment to environmental stewardship,” N.G. Subramaniam, COO and executive director, said in a statement. “To curb emissions and limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, all organizations will have to reimagine existing business models and aim for sustainable growth. We are in a unique position to combine our purpose-driven world view with digital innovation to not only drive our own sustainability, but also partner with customers, civil society and governments to lead and shape solutions for a sustainable future.”

The company has been reducing its carbon footprint through the addition of green buildings to its real estate portfolio, reduction of IT system power usage and the adoption of an IoT, machine learning, and AI technology that optimizes energy consumption. To continue lowering its emissions, TCS will pursue more renewable energy, carbon offset credits, and reducing emissions from employee commuting.
