Smithfield Foods Targets 30% Cut to Supply Chain Emissions
Smithfield Foods committed June 2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its entire domestic supply chain 30% by 2030.
This new target follows a previous commitment to reduce emissions in the food company’s supply chain 25% by 2025 in pursuit of its larger goal to become carbon negative in all U.S. company-owned operations by 2030. In support of these targets, Smithfield also intends to source 50% renewable energy over the same time period.
These targets are outlined in Smithfield’s newly released 2020 Sustainability Impact Report. The company expects that the successful achievement of these goals could reduce its emissions by nearly 5 million metric tons.
“Our latest commitments underscore Smithfield's perennial dedication to sustainability,” Stewart Leeth, chief sustainability officer for Smithfield Foods, said in a statement. “Following an unprecedented year, Smithfield carries a renewed sense of purpose in our calling to responsibly produce food and ensure access to affordable, high-quality protein for the growing global population. Through the significant efforts we have undertaken through our sustainability program, we are continuing to realize this call through initiatives that create value for our company and for our stakeholders.”
