Facebook Reaches Net-Zero Goal
Facebook announced with the release of its 2020 Sustainability Report that it met its goal of net-zero emissions and 100% renewable energy for its global operations.
The social network also reduced emissions 94% between 2017 and 2020, overshooting the original target of 75. With the announcement of these accomplishments, Facebook also released its new target of reaching net-zero emissions for its entire value chain by 2030.
In reaching 100% renewable energy use, Facebook now has a portfolio of 5.9 GW of solar and wind projects under contract and an operating portfolio of 2.8 GW across 15 U.S. states, Europe and Asia. Part of this accomplishment was also that the company offset the energy usage of its employees working from home with its renewable energy generation as well, a first for the company.
“While this progress is important, our collective work is far from over,” Rachel Peterson, vice president of infrastructure at Facebook, wrote in an opening letter to the report. “Businesses must continue to take strong, quick action to combat climate change’s toll on our planet. As we continue to innovate and implement solutions to drive climate action, we will work to ensure that our solutions take into account the people who are most affected by climate change so that the world can see a safer, cleaner, and healthier tomorrow.”
Other sustainability advances included the investment into carbon removal projects that removed 145,000 metric tons of carbon from the atmosphere, such as reforestation projects in East Africa and the Mississippi River Valley.
