Cloudflare Expands Energy Efficiency of its Global Network
Cloudflare announced July 27 that it intends to operate its Internet services on 100% renewable energy and remove all historical carbon emissions its global network has emitted since its founding by 2025.
The Internet network provider estimates that 17% of the Internet exists on its network, marking a significant impact on the entire industry.
“Internet usage has skyrocketed in the last couple of years, growing over 80 percent on our network, and is showing no signs of slowing down. For every search you do, online order you make, and video call you join, there is an environmental impact from the physical data centers, servers, and other physical infrastructure the Internet relies on,” Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, said in a statement. “We want to give the Internet a clean slate to help build toward a future where it’s easy for anyone to create, build, and run their applications on green energy while remaining secure, fast, and reliable.”
Cloudflare customers will also be able to take advantage of new computing services and energy-efficient features to allow businesses to route traffic through data centers powered by renewable energy and quantify their own carbon footprints and savings from using Cloudflare. Other efficiency features include reducing unnecessary energy from search engines indexing the web and allowing websites to certify that they are powered by 100% renewable energy with Cloudflare Pages.
