Fresh Del Monte Targets 27.5% Emissions Cut

Fresh Del Monte Produce announced Aug. 17 a new target to decrease its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 27.5% from 2019 to 2030.

The food producer released its 2020 Sustainability Report, outlining this target along with a target to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 12.3% between 2020 and 2030. By the end of last year, Fresh Del Monte had decreased its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 14% and 5%, respectively, since 2019 and 2020, while overall emissions increased 8% due to a rise in Scope 3 emissions after increased data collection.

The company exceeded its 2025 goal to reduce absolute Scope 1 carbon emissions from vessel shipping by 10% since 2019 with a 32% reduction by the end of 2020. Additionally, during 2020 it added six new fuel-efficient vessels to its fleet.

To further reduce its Scope 2 emissions, more than 14% of Fresh Del Monte’s energy use comes from renewable sources, including onsite wind turbines, distribution center solar arrays and biogas programs.

In addition to its energy-related goals, the company is focused on implementing regenerative and soil health management practices in 100% of owned and associate growers’ farms by 2030.

“We are very proud of the steps we’ve taken, and are taking to create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient food system,” Hans Sauter, chief sustainability officer and SVP of research & development at Fresh Del Monte, said in a statement. “However, what brings me the most joy is that our programs are truly born out of passion, starting at the ground level, literally and figuratively, with every team member taking an active role in advancing our efforts. Without our team members, we wouldn’t stand a chance. This Sustainability Report is the mosaic of all the contributions our team members around the globe are living every single day.”
