Granite Searches for Ways to Cut Operational Emissions
Granite released Sept. 1 its 2020 sustainability report with a focus on the processes it has implemented to reduce the impact of its construction materials production.
In order to reduce its carbon footprint, the company is focused on improving its data collection and reporting systems to better quantify emissions and investing in technologies and practices that reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions directly. Granite is more specifically looking to implement hybrid technology construction equipment, retiring older and less-efficient equipment and transitioning to the use of alternative fuels.
Three of its construction materials facilities now use solar power, while some have implemented lower-impact processes to produce asphalt with less fuel consumption.
“We are integrating new sustainability goals and targets into our company strategy to ensure effective implementation throughout our organization,” Kyle Larkin, Granite president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “With these goals, we will reduce our carbon footprint, enhance positive social impacts in the communities where we work, and strengthen our position as a leading provider of sustainable infrastructure solutions.”
The report also contains the details of Granites first climate risk assessment. The construction materials company also finds that its environmental frameworks align with standard sustainability reporting frameworks like the Global Reporting Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.
