ATL Adopts City of Atlanta's 2050 Net Zero Goal
Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) announced Feb. 11 that it is committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2035 and reaching net-zero operations by 2050, aligning with the City of Atlanta’s same goals.
The airport plans to tackle its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by conducting energy retrofits and proactive maintenance on its buildings, in addition to transitioning to all-electric building systems. ATL will release its 2035 Sustainable Management Plan later in 2022 outlining a more detailed plan for reducing its carbon footprint.
The airport is also collaborating with Georgia Power on analyzing its energy data in order to generate more specific energy conservation recommendations, as well as renewable energy and load-shedding opportunities. The use of the utility’s arbnco platform will allow ATL to establish an energy baseline from which to position future energy goals.
“ATL is committed to positioning the Airport for the future,” Balram “B” Bheodari, Airport General Manager, said in a statement. “We have a responsibility to make sure we create a clean, sustainable environment for the generations that come after us. It won’t be easy, but nothing worth pursuing is ever easy. We look forward to this challenge.”
More immediate targets include meeting a minimum of LEED Silver certification and reducing emissions by meeting a minimum efficiency standard, integrating advanced building systems and reducing construction-related emissions.
