IBM Updates 2030 Goals
IBM updated its strategy for its 2030 goal to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2030 with the release of IBM Impact, a new framework for the company's environmental, social, and governance (ESG).
The company will procure 75% of the electricity IBM consumes worldwide from renewable sources by 2025 and 90% by 2030 and will also reduce its GHG emissions 65% by 2025 against base year 2010, adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures.
IBM will use feasible technologies to remove emissions in an amount that equals or exceeds IBM’s residual emissions and aim for residual emissions of 350,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent or less by 2030.
The company will implement a minimum of 3,000 new energy conservation projects to avoid the consumption of 275,000 MWh of energy from 2021 to 2025 and also improve average data center cooling efficiency 20% by 2025 against base year 2019.
"IBMers have always applied their time, talent, and technology to make a meaningful impact in the world, evolving the nature of their work over time to meet the most urgent needs of society," said Arvind Krishna, IBM Chairman and CEO in a statement. "As always, we stand ready to collaborate with our clients, partners, and governments to build a safer, more equitable and peaceful future."
