JetBlue Commits to Reducing Jet Fuel Emissions 50%
JetBlue has committed to reducing its jet fuel emissions by 50% per revenue ton kilometer by 2035 in order to achieve net zero by 2040.
The airline company plans to increase investments in lower-carbon solutions and to work with aircraft and engine manufacturers, governments, regulatory agencies, and fuel suppliers to monitor their own GHG emission reduction goals. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is expected to be the key contributor to large-scale emissions reduction, alongside transitioning to new aircraft models and other efficiency improvements to come over the next decades and finding opportunities for increased efficiency in its operations.
Additional reductions will be achieved through carbon removals and offsets.
By targeting jet fuel emissions, the airline company will be reducing Scope 1 and 3 emissions from a 2019 baseline. JetBlue also plans to regularly review and update this target following any significant change to its business or structure.
“Effectively cutting our per-seat emissions in half will require substantial change to the way we run our business today,” JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said in a statement. “Our team is fully committed to hitting the goal, but we can’t do it alone. We are calling on governments, aircraft and engine manufacturers, and fuel producers to support the development of the products and solutions that airlines need to achieve our ambitious goals.”
The Science Based Targets initiative has approved these targets.
