Wendy's Sets Goals to Reduce Carbon Footprint
The Wendy’s Company revealed its progress across three key pillars featured in its Good Done Right ESG strategy: Food, People and Footprint. In its endeavor to be a more responsible corporate citizen, Wendy’s has set new goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Specifically, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint by achieving key milestones in sustainable packaging and mitigating its climate impact.
In a statement, Liliana Esposito, Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer at Wendy’s, said, "After establishing our corporate responsibility goals and laying a strong foundation in prior years, we are now taking significant steps forward in delivering on our commitments across Food, People and Footprint. I am proud of the collective efforts of our team, stakeholders and franchisees as we prepare the brand for accelerated global growth while working toward a more sustainable Wendy's."
The company set science-based targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative nearly a year ahead of schedule to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 47% by 2030 globally.
With its provision of clear plastic drink cups that customers can recycle, the company also exceeded the halfway point to its goal of sustainably sourcing 100% of customer-facing packaging by 2026.
The company launched Global Next Gen, the brand’s new restaurant design standard that is 10% more efficient than its existing restaurant design, to advance its efforts to reduce energy consumption and grow renewable energy procurement. It also subscribed to Duke Energy Florida's Clean Energy Connection pilot program, which supplies select restaurants with solar energy.
Additional insights into Wendy’s ESG progress and goals are featured in its 2022 Corporate Responsibility report.
