Avantor Beats Emissions Target by Two Years

Avantor, Inc., a global provider of products and services in the life sciences and advanced technologies industries, achieved its 2025 emissions reduction target two years ahead of schedule, lowering operational GHG emissions by 16.7% from 2019 to 2023.

This achievement involved assessing its manufacturing facilities’ energy intensity and GHG emissions, developing an action plan based on those assessments and implementing site-specific energy efficiency and process optimization initiatives.

The company’s cross-functional Environmental Task Force, created in 2022, oversees Avantor’s emissions reduction strategy, including setting internal annual targets, tracking projects and training and educating associates.

Over 40 projects implemented across its manufacturing sites and distribution centers contributed to the reductions, including 20 completed in 2023. The projects included infrastructure improvements and energy efficiency initiatives, such as HVAC upgrades, steam system upgrades, and relocating operations to more efficient facilities.

These achievements helped the company lower its 2023 Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2,189 MT CO2e, a 4.9% decrease from 2022.

In 2023, Avantor established new science-based targets for 2030 and submitted these for review and verification by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company set new targets for 2030 to lower Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% from a 2020 baseline and reduce Scope 3 emissions by 25% from a 2020 baseline.

Details were released in the company's 2024 Sustainability Report.

"Our Science for Goodness platform is integral to our business strategy and to the value that we provide to our stakeholders," said Michael Stubblefield, President and CEO of Avantor, in a statement. "We are pleased with the progress we have made and remain committed to creating a better, healthier world."
