American Tower Increases RE by 40%

American Tower Corporation announced the company achieved continued reduction in combined Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and increased on-site renewable energy generation by 40% globally, growing capacity from 87 megawatts (MW) to approximately 120 MW across over 18,000 sites and producing more than 100 gigawatt hours of clean energy.

The owner, operator and developer of multitenant communications real estate also sourced more than 257,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy, with 54,000 MWh allocated to its operations in Spain in 2023 and almost four times that amount, or almost 203,000 MWh, used by its customers.

American Tower seeks to improve energy efficiency at its sites to achieve its science-based targets and has a goal to improve on-site energy efficiency by implementing energy management systems (EMSs), upgrading to more energy-efficient equipment and installing new technologies.

Details were released in its 2023 sustainability executive report and accompanying indices and supplements, which outline the company's  sustainability strategy.

“At American Tower, we seek to embed sustainability into our core operations,” said Steve Vondran, American Tower’s President and CEO, in a statement. “In 2023, we further reduced our greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to the continued success of our Power-as-a-Service program. This initiative focuses on renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and advanced energy storage systems, and has played a crucial role in bolstering our environmental efforts. Additionally, our growing Digital Communities program has enhanced education, healthcare access and financial literacy in underserved markets. I’m proud of our employees' commitment to supporting our stakeholders while making a positive global impact.”
