European Parliament President-Elect Keeps Emissions Goals
European Parliament Plenary President Elect Ursula von der Leyen announced that she plans to maintain emission reduction goals set for 2030 and 2050.
During the first half of 2024, 50% of electricity generation came from renewables, according to an announcement. Investments in clean technologies in Europe have more than tripled under this mandate, and Europe has attracted more investments in clean hydrogen than the U.S. and China combined.
According to von der Leyen, over the last few years, Europe also completed 35 new agreements for clean tech, hydrogen and critical raw materials with its global partners, marking the European Green Deal in action.
“We will stay the course on our new growth strategy and the goals we set for 2030 and 2050," von der Leyen said in a statement. "Our focus now will be on implementation and investment to make it happen on the ground. This is why I will put forward a new Clean Industrial Deal in the first 100 days. It will channel investment in infrastructure and industry, in particular for energy-intensive sectors.”
Von der Leyen announced that maintaining Europe’s decarbonization goals will help create lead markets in everything from clean steel to clean tech and will speed up planning, tendering and permitting.
The European Parliament will keep its 90% reduction target for 2040 in its European Climate Law.
