Taylor Morrison Expands Emissions Categories

Home builder Taylor Morrison announced the company conducted a more robust assessment of its carbon footprint, spanning additional emissions categories to provide a more complete inventory of its Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions.

The company also announced a 10% improvement in its average Home Energy Rating System (HERS®) score since 2020, reflecting progress in increasing energy efficiency and reducing operational GHG emissions of the company's homes. Taylor Morrison reported an average home score of 57, compared to 100 for a typical home built to 2006 energy efficiency standards.

Taylor Morrison  published details in its sixth annual report on corporate sustainability, now called the Sustainability and Belonging Report, highlighting the company's commitment to corporate responsibility through sustainable business practices. 

As a homebuilder, value chain (Scope 3) emissions account for the vast majority of the company’s total emissions, capturing the production of the homes and customers’ lifetime use of them. Within Scope 3, Purchased Goods and Services (Category 1) and Use of Sold Products (Category 11) are the most material emissions categories, accounting for 58% and 41% of total emissions, respectively.

The majority of emissions within this category are associated with the materials used in constructing the homes, commonly referred to as embodied carbon, which describes the emissions linked to a product throughout its lifecycle, including raw material sourcing, supplier processing, shipments from material suppliers and manufacturing.

Taylor Morrison's disclosures align with the material topics highlighted by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
