Waste Connections Lowers Emissions by 40%
Waste Connections, Inc., an integrated solid waste services company, announced reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity of over 40% from a 2019 baseline with absolute emissions down 13%.
The company also initiated testing of electric vehicles in New York City as part of commercial franchise introduction, with additional units on order.
Waste Connections also announced continued increases in recycling and biogas recovery and beneficial reuse, including investments in new facilities.
In 2023, the company doubled its Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction target to a 30% decrease and initiated a Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) review.
In 2024, Waste Connections began operation of several RNG plants and one advanced recycling facility, delivered its first electric vehicles and opened a sustainability campus at Champ Landfill.
Approximately 10% of the company's fleet runs on alternative fuels like compressed natural gas (CNG) and biodiesel. The company operates two fully electric and one hybrid electric refuse vehicles and is planning to expand the testing of these alternative fuels in the future.
Details were released in its 2024 Sustainability Report, which demonstrates progress toward the company's ESG targets and sustainability-related objectives.
“2023 was another year of progress towards our sustainability-related goals, which we believe are inextricably linked to our focus on value creation in our business," said Ronald J. Mittelstaedt, President and Chief Executive Officer, in a statement. "With a multi-year reduction of 40% in emissions intensity, we have demonstrated that outsized growth is compatible with the achievement of our long-term aspirational ESG targets."
