RYAM Remains on Track for 2030 Goals
Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. announced the company is on track to meet its 2030 goal of reducing combined Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40% from its 2020 baseline. Leveraging sustainable products and circular processes, RYAM sourced nearly 78% of the energy consumed in its global operations from renewable resources.
The global company produces cellulose-based technologies, including high purity cellulose specialties, a natural polymer commonly used in the production of filters, food, pharmaceuticals and other industrial applications and remains focused on continued expansion of its biomaterials growth strategy.
In 2023, the company launched its Tartas, France, 2G bioethanol facility and is exploring a second project in the U.S. Bioethanol significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional fuels.
RYAM partnered with Anomera to produce carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), a biodegradable alternative to fossil fuel-based microbeads used in consumer cosmetics and other applications.
Altamaha Green Energy (AGE), a joint venture between Beasley Green Power and RYAM, has received certification from the Georgia Public Service Commission to produce and sell up to 70 MW of renewable electricity to Georgia Power over a 30-year period. The project, still in development, would generate sustainable electricity using bark, tree limbs and other biomass generally discarded as waste. This initiative supports Georgia's renewable energy goals and strengthens the state's forestry economy.
RYAM and Verso Energy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore producing sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) using biogenic CO2 from RYAM's Tartas, France, plant and green hydrogen. The two companies are pursuing French government grants to support the multi-year feasibility study.
In alignment with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and other global standards, detailed data and findings from the company’s recently conducted climate scenario analysis are disclosed, along with associated risks, opportunities, and resilience planning.
“The release of our 2023 Sustainability Report underscores RYAM’s commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable solutions to our customers while fostering a positive impact on our employees and communities. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and will continue to drive initiatives that support the transition to a more sustainable future,” said De Lyle Bloomquist, President and CEO of RYAM, in a statement.
