Eutelsat Group’s Goals Approved by SBTi
Eutelsat Group, a satellite communications provider, announced that its near-term GHG emissions reduction targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The SBTi recognized the Group’s scope 1 and 2 targets as aligned with a 1.5°C trajectory, in line with the Paris Agreement.
The approved targets include:
- A 50% absolute reduction in energy-related GHG emissions (Scopes 1+2) by 2030, using 2021 as the baseline year
- A 52% reduction in carbon intensity per Satellite Mbit, the speed of satellite internet (Scope 3) by 2030 within the same timeframe
“This validation by the SBTi underscores our commitment to addressing the urgent environmental challenges of our time,” said Jean-Hubert Lenotte, Chief Strategy and Resources Officer and Executive Committee Member of Eutelsat Group, in a statement. “At Eutelsat Group, the protection of the environment on Earth and in Space is at the heart of our CSR mission and strategy, driving us to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to global efforts against climate change. Today’s milestone reinforces our role as a responsible player in the space industry, taking concrete action to reduce emissions and support climate action."
In 2024, Eutelsat Group achieved significant milestones in its environmental strategy, including the implementation of new solar panel programs at its teleports in Mexico, alongside expanding similar initiatives in Italy and Portugal. Additionally, it made substantial progress by transitioning to green energy contracts, further solidifying its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing sustainable practices across operations.
