HS Hyosung Advanced Materials Receives SBTi Approval

Textile manufacturer HS Hyosung Advanced Materials received official validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its 2030 GHG reduction target.

The approved targets for HS Hyosung Advanced Materials include a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 from a 2021 base year. This covers direct emissions from energy consumption and process operations at global business sites, as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity and steam.

The company also seeks to lower selected Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030 from a 2021 base year. This focuses primarily on category 1 (purchased goods and services) and category 3 (fuel and energy-related activities), which represent the largest share of the company’s value chain emissions.

To achieve these targets, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has developed specific action plans. These include GHG and energy reduction activities, installing solar power generation facilities, and concluding power purchase agreements (PPAs). The company plans to engage with its business partners, encouraging them to set their own reduction targets and supporting their efforts in emission reduction activities.

“The latest approval signifies far more than merely setting reduction goals; it represents internationally recognized, science-based targets,” said Lim Jin-dal, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, in a statement. “We will strive to elevate our global environmental leadership and actively contribute to a sustainable future.”

In addition to its GHG reduction commitments, in October 2024 the company received the Platinum Medal from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 1% of over 130,000 companies evaluated globally for sustainability performance. The company was listed in the 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) Korea for two consecutive years.
