Con Edison boasts strong year for energy efficiency incentives for C&I customers
In 2015, 28,300 Con Edison customers got rebates from the utility for making energy-saving upgrades. Those customers received $44 million in incentives from Con Edison for upgrades that included lighting, HVAC equipment, building management systems and other improvements, according to a news release.
The upgrades customers made last year prevented 111,800 tons of carbon from being released into the atmosphere. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, that's the equivalent of taking more than 23,500 cars off the road.
"Our customers know a good deal when they see one and our energy efficiency programs are an incredible value," Vicki Kuo, Con Edison's director of Energy Efficiency said in a statement. "We work with customers every day to help them make upgrades that lower their electric and gas usage."
More than 5,300 small business customers received $23 million in incentives last year, the utility said. The company offers programs for residential, multi-family, small business, and large industrial customers. Since 2009, Con Ed has provided $236 million in rebates to 250,000 customers.
The company said it made several enhancements to its energy efficiency programs for 2016: Con Edison will give customers $75 for buying eligible high-efficiency refrigerators, $50 for dishwashers, $35 for clothes washers and $20 for dehumidifiers.
Con Ed provides the following information on its website:
Con Edison and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) are helping customers find innovative ways to manage their energy use and save money. The Demand Management Program offers enhanced incentives for energy efficient technology that will help improve operational performance of buildings and reduce electric demand.
Building owners and building managers, who are Con Edison electric customers and third party developers acting on behalf of the building owners and building managers are eligible for the enhanced incentives based on their demand reduction for energy efficiency and demand management projects that are completed prior to June 1, 2016.
Incentives are available to eligible customers for energy improvements that contribute to the reduction of the system-coincident peak demand during the summer months. Eligible customers can qualify for the incentives through the current energy efficiency -programs and the new Demand Management Program incentives.
Types of projects that are eligible for the increased incentives include:
Project Type | Current Incentives | NEW Increased Incentives |
Thermal Storage | $600/kW | $2,600/kW |
Battery Storage | $600/kW | $2,100/kW |
Chiller/HVAC/BMS/Controls | $0.16/kWh | $0.16/kWh + $1,250/kW |
Lighting/LED | $0.16/kWh | $0.16/kWh + $800/kW |
DR Enablement | $200/kW | $800/kW |
Fuel Switching: Non-Electric A/C* | Steam A/C Program | $500 - $1,000/kW |
*Incentives will be offered for installing steam or natural gas A/C rather than electric A/C. |
Projects that achieve a peak reduction of 500 kW or more can also earn additional bonus incentives.
Correction: This article's headline was amended April 1 to more accurately represent Con Edison's March 8 announcement regarding its 2015 customer incentives. The original headline implied Con Edison had increased rebates for C&I customers for 2016.
