3M signs 120 MW wind deal with Invenergy

Technology and chemical company 3M last month signed a power purchase agreement to obtain 120 MW of wind-generated electricity that will be used to power its North American operations. Power company Invenergy will supply the electricity from its Gunsight Wind Energy Center in Texas.

The power will be supplied to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas regional electricity grid, and 3M will purchase renewable energy certificates, according to an Invenergy news release. 

"Corporate off-site renewable energy procurement is one of the most exciting changes we've seen recently in our industry as the sector nearly tripled from 2014 to 2015 with more than 3,400 MW announced," Invenergy sales and marketing vice president Craig Gordon said in the release. "We expect 2016 to be another strong year for direct corporate procurement."

3M environment, health, safety and sustainability vice president Jean Bennington Sweeney said the PPA is "an important and significant step" toward accomplishing the company's goal of increasing renewable energy to 25% of its total electricity use by 2025. 

Counting the 3M deal, Invenergy's total corporate renewable energy portfolio stands at 570MW.
