Pennsylvania utility greenlit for $420M-plus energy efficiency program

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved Peco Energy Co.'s plan to spend $427.4 million over the next five years on energy efficiency programs. The plan aims to reduce total customer energy use 5% by 2021.

Energy-saving solutions supported by the funding include discount low-wattage lighting, energy audits, and incentives for efficient appliances or building retrofits. The utility estimates the programs will reduce energy consumption by nearly two million MWh by 2021 and reduce customer demand by 161 MW during high-use periods.

Peco has said that since its program was launched in 2009, more than 600,000 customers have cut energy use by about 2.2 million megawatt hours and saved more than $500 million, according to reporting by Philly.com. Peco is a subsidiary of Exelon Corp.
