IKEA Las Vegas wraps up solar installation, to be the largest of its kind in Nevada

Marking its 43rd solar project in the U.S., IKEA has finished the installation of a 1.14-MW solar system atop its Las Vegas store, which is set to open May 18. 

The project, once it is commissioned, will be the largest single-use retail rooftop solar array in Nevada, IKEA said in a March 21 news release. The 240,504-square-foot system is expected to produce about 1,750,000 kWh of electricity annually for the store, the equivalent of reducing 1,207 tons of carbon dioxide, according to EPA estimates. 

IKEA partnered with Helix Electric for the development, design and installation of the customized solar power system, which contributes to solar presence at nearly 90% of IKEA's U.S. locations. 

"Installing the solar panels is another exciting and sustainable step in the progress towards opening the future IKEA Las Vegas," store manager Amy Jensen said in the news release. "IKEA strives to create a sustainable life for communities where we operate, and IKEA Las Vegas is adding to this goal with Nevada’s largest single-use retail rooftop solar array." 

IKEA owns and operates each of the solar photovoltaic energy systems atop its buildings, as opposed to using a solar lease or power purchase agreements.  Globally, IKEA has allocated more than $2 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2020.  Consistent with its goal of being energy independent by 2020, IKEA has installed more than 700,000 solar panels across the world and owns about 157 wind turbines in Europe and Canada, with 104 more in the U.S.
