Commercial real estate developer Simon Property Group Inc. on Sept. 14 announced that one of its California properties, Brea Mall, has started using two Tesla Powerpack systems.
According to Simon's 2015 sustainability report, the company commissioned the storage system in collaboration with the mall's utility, Southern California Edison, last year for the Brea, Calif., mall to enable the company to store energy "to manage peak power demand and reduce stress on the grid."
Electrek reported that the installation consists of two separate systems, one 250 kW/500 kWh system and one 500 kW/1MWh system, which combine for a total 750 kW/1.5 MWh capacity. The media outlet said Simon expected to save "thousands of dollars annually" on its energy bill by charging the battery systems in off-peak hours, when electricity rates are lowest, and operating the systems during peak hours, when rates are higher.
"This installation is an example of how Simon is incorporating energy efficiency into its business practices as part of its overall Sustainability framework," Electrek quoted Simon director of sustainably Mona Benisi as saying in a news release. " . Having such capabilities means also having potential to scale energy efficiency and savings across multiple centers."
Tesla in April released new pricing details for its Powerpack systems.
Southern California Edison is a subsidiary of Rosemead, Calif.,-based Edison International.
