Avery Dennison inks PPA for Texas wind

Labeling and packaging materials manufacturer Avery Dennison Corp. has signed a power purchase agreement for output from a Texas wind project that is expected to offset 50% of its U.S.-based greenhouse gas emissions derived from electricity use.

The agreement for 20 MW of  capacity from a nearly 300-MW facility to be located in Ochiltree County, Texas, helps move the Glendale, Calif.-based company's needle further toward its goal of using renewable energy to power 100% of  U.S. operations by 2025, Avery Dennison said in a Dec. 5 news release. The PPA with Apex Clean Energy's Perryton Wind project is also a key component of Avery Dennison's 2025 sustainability goal to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by at least 3% annually, and by at least 26% overall, between 2015 and 2025.

Roland Simon, vice president of global procurement and global sustainability leader at Avery Dennison, said in the company's statement that the partnership with Apex is one of the ways the company continues to create shared value for itself, the industry and communities worldwide. The company's most recent sustainability commitments coincide with its joining of the World Wildlife Fund's Climate Savers Program, according to the release.

"It's important for us to optimize renewable energy sources in a way that ripples outward to create change that encompasses far more than our own business," Simon said.
