Zayo Group buys RECs, offsets 25% of energy use

Communications firm Zayo Group Holdings Inc. announced July 5 that it was made a U.S. EPA Green Power Partner after purchasing 86 million kWh of renewable energy certificates.

The certificates will be used to power five of the company’s 46 data centers. The zColo data centers receiving the certificates are located in Illinois, Texas and New Jersey. The move is reflective of Zayo’s recent emphasis on sustainability, according to a news release.

According to the EPA, 25% of Zayo’s total electricity use is now attributable to green power.

The Green Power Partner list includes approximately 1,400 organizations that the EPA has recognized for their renewable energy use, including Apple Inc., Best Buy and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The nearly 1,400 partners on the list are collectively using more than 35 billion kWh of green power annually, according to the EPA.

“Sustainability is aligned with our values at Zayo and addresses our customers’ requests for green power and other environmentally responsible practices,” TJ Karklins, senior vice president of Zayo’s zColo business segment said in a statement. “This initiative represents a vital next step in our long-term commitment to sustainability.”

Zayo, a network that provides communications infrastructure services, includes wireless and wireline carriers, media and content companies and finance, healthcare and other companies across North America and Europe.
