Navigant outlines importance of intelligent buildings

A new report published by Navigant Research examines the value that intelligent building technologies provide to the world of corporate sustainability in terms of facilities and energy management, IT and operations teams using a single intelligent building platform to monitor progress toward corporate sustainability goals.

Intelligent Building Technologies for Sustainability looks at the market for these technologies and explains the importance of analytics within facilities management to the success of a company’s sustainability strategy.

“Leadership in sustainability can be a competitive advantage as organizations respond to shareholder, regulatory and customer demands for tackling climate change,” Casey Talon, principal research analyst with Navigant Research, said in a statement. “Investment in intelligent building analytics, in particular, can lead to effective and efficient ways to track the data and metrics that determine how well these companies are doing relative to their corporate goals.”

These technologies for building and facilities management can provide visible evidence of the improvements made in the operation of offices and commercial buildings, according to a news release explaining the report.

An executive summary of the report describes investment in intelligent building technologies as an “impactful and cost effective approach to achieving sustainability goals,” especially when used as a tool for tracking emissions reductions and reporting progress within frameworks such as the Carbon Disclosure Project, Global Reporting Initiative, RE100 and Science Based Targets.

“The future of the intelligent buildings market is an ecosystem of technologies that work together—a platform for optimizing facility operations,” the executive summary states. “Measuring and tracking sustainability metrics is an important part of the business case for customers.”

The report also specifically outlines the impact that tools to track to data and analytics of onsite and distributed resources such as renewables and storage, electric vehicles and charging stations, as well as building equipment and space use, to help companies reach their sustainability goals and minimize risk associated with the implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
