PepsiCo books largest known order of Tesla Semis

PepsiCo Inc. has become the latest large company to place an order for Tesla's recently unveiled all-electric heavy-duty Semi truck, Reuters reported Dec. 13.

An executive with PepsiCo told the news outlet that the company has reserved 100 Tesla Semis as part of its efforts to reduce fuel costs and fleet emissions, marking the largest known order for the trucks. Combined with smaller orders from more than a dozen other companies such as Walmart, J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., Sysco Corp. and Meijer Inc., Reuters estimates that Tesla truck reservations to-date are at least 285. 

Reuters reported: 

PepsiCo intends to deploy Tesla Semis for shipments of snack foods and beverages between manufacturing and distribution facilities and direct to retailers within the 500-mile (800-km) range promised by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk. The semi-trucks will complement PepsiCo's U.S. fleet of nearly 10,000 big rigs and are a key part of its plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its supply chain by a total of at least 20 percent by 2030, said Mike O‘Connell, senior director of North American supply chain for PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay.

Earlier in 2017, PepsiCo and Walmart joined four other initial signatories to the Sustainable Fuel Buyers Principles organized by global nonprofit BSR with an aim to accelerate a transition to low-carbon fuel and related technologies.
