Audi Field to add PACE-funded solar array
Audi Field hosted major league soccer franchise D.C. United’s first game July 14 as the stadium premiered a set of initiatives designed to create a more sustainable facility.
Washington Business Journal reported that the District of Columbia’s Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program will finance energy and water efficiency measures, including an 884-kilowatt solar array, which will be installed by D.C.-based New Columbia Solar. D.C. United closed on the $25 million PACE energy funding package in 2017.
The solar panels, in addition to other green initiatives at Audi Field, a 20,000-seat, $500 million stadium, "are expected to offset the stadium’s electrical usage by one-third, saving D.C. United $125,000 a year on its utility bills," according to the report. These other green initiatives include recycling, food waste composting, educational materials and staff training.
