UH Manoa plans solar system
The University of Hawaii at Mānoa will add a photovoltaic canopy on the top deck of its main parking structure along with several rooftop solar arrays to generate 2 MW of electricity. The system, to be completed in 2019, is part of the University’s plan to move the campus closer to its 2035 net-zero energy goal.
A report by UH News noted that the Mānoa campus has a base load of approximately 10MW and a peak load of about 20MW. An estimated 60% of the campus’ energy is consumed by precision HVAC systems to support research activities.
"Not only does this make economic sense, these projects will help the state achieve its overall 100 percent clean energy goals. It’s the right thing to do for future generations," said David Lassner, UH Mānoa interim chancellor.
In addition to these PV projects, the University has implemented efficiency retrofits including LED conversions, HVAC system modernizations, and programs to optimize space utilization.
