LA Lakers open solar-powered training facility
The Los Angeles Lakers premiered a solar-powered, state-of-the-art headquarters, the UCLA Health Training Center. The solar installation features 456 panels to generate an estimated 245,000 kWh annually for a projected savings of about $38,000 per year.
The team partnered with LG Electronics USA and Vaha Energy to create the Center, described in a statement as a 120,000-square-foot LEED Platinum certified facility that serves as both the Lakers' training facility and the home court of the South Bay Lakers. Vaha Energy estimates the installation will pay for itself in less than four years.
Joseph McCormack, CFO and senior vice president of finance for the Lakers, said, "One of our goals as an organization is to be at the forefront of energy efficiency, and these panels further our commitment to sustainability."
The statement said the Lakers approached the project with "a desire to reduce their carbon footprint and to achieve LEED Gold status." The Lakers also participated in Southern California Edison's Savings by Design program, which provides cash incentives and technical/design assistance to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability for nonresidential construction.
