Walmart shoppers save with LED lighting
Walmart announced Oct. 4 that its customers successfully saved 1.2 billion kWh of electricity use over the last two years through the purchase of energy-efficient LED light bulbs over traditional bulbs.
The accomplishment accompanies Walmart's Project Gigaton, an initiative that is aiming for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by one gigaton by 2030 throughout Walmart's supplier network. Other sustainability goals set by the company include reducing emissions in its own operations by 18% by 2025.
The megastore chain estimates that by switching to LED light bulbs over the past two years, their customers will save more than $2 billion collectively over the life of the LED bulbs, according to a press release about the initiative. GE Lighting began offering more than 100 LED products at Walmart stores, including various low-cost options, in support of the project.
"Walmart is expanding its assortment of more-sustainable products from brands our customers love," Laura Phillips, Walmart’s senior vice president for global sustainability, said in a statement. "GE Lighting is demonstrating that innovative suppliers can deliver high-quality, sustainable products as part of the Walmart everyday low price promise.”
In addition to advocating for the purchase of LED lighting by their customers, Walmart has also installed more than 1.5 million LED fixtures across their own stores, parking lots, distribution centers and corporate offices worldwide. Through these efforts, it has reduced energy consumption and cost by more than $100 million.
