Ohio trucking terminal adds microgrid
Pitt Ohio, a regional trucking and logistics company, will deploy a renewable energy microgrid at its trucking terminal in Parma, Ohio. The microgrid uses solar, wind power and battery-based energy storage to optimize on-site power and distribution for cost and reliability, based on Pitt Ohio’s needs and utility grid conditions. The microgrid is currently under construction and will be completed in Spring, 2019.
A report by Microgrid Knowledge noted that “in addition to working in-sync with the utility grid, the microgrid will be able to operate autonomously, in island mode, and produce and distribute enough emissions-free electricity to serve all the Parma terminal’s electricity loads during grid outages, and then some.”
The system will feature 495 KW of solar PV, 48 KW of wind power and 730 kWh of lithium-ion-based battery energy storage capacity, which will combine to produce electricity in excess of the facility’s typical needs. Surplus energy will be stored and may be sold to the utility grid.
Pitt Ohio is purchasing the microgrid from WindStax. EnSync will supply systems integration, command and control. The two companies will provide operations and maintenance services to Pitt Ohio under a 25-year contract.
