New Nike distribution center powered by 100% clean energy
Nike opened a new distribution center in Ham, Belgium power entirely on renewable energy, the company announced September 16.
The 1.5 million square feet facility, referred to as “The Court,” operates completely from wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass power and is an expansion of the athletic company’s European Logistics Campus.
The facility features other sustainability initiatives, including a surrounding network of canals, which enables 99% of inbound containers to reach the local container park by water. This reduces carbon emissions by eliminating nearly 14,000 truck journeys each year.
“Our new Court Distribution Center represents Nike’s continued investment in a fast and flexible supply chain to deliver the full range of our product to consumers when they want it, where they want it,” Eric Sprunk, Nike’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “This state-of-the-art facility will increase our responsiveness as we accelerate our digital growth and better serve millions of consumers across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.”
The expansion of Nike’s European Logistics Campus follows the company’s recent efforts in recent years to aligns its energy targets with those of the Paris Agreement. In May 2016, the company announced its goal to power all operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 and expanded its clean energy pursuit beyond North America when it signed its first PPA in Europe in February.
