Owens Corning sets 2030 emissions and RE goals
Owens Corning set their target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and source 100% renewable energy as part of their 2030 sustainability goals announced Oct. 11.
The emissions reduction target is in line with the guidance to keep global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius and was approved by the Science Based Target Initiative.
“The scope and ambition of our sustainability goals have evolved over the years, from an initial focus on reducing our environmental footprint, to our current 2030 aspirations to double the positive impact of our products, halve the negative impact of our operations, eliminate injuries, improve the quality of life for our employees and their families, advance inclusion and diversity, and have a positive impact on our communities,” Chief Sustainability Officer Frank O’Brien Bernini said in a statement.
Other 2030 sustainability goals that Owens Corning has set for itself include maximizing product sustainability, including circular economy strategies for reduced consumption of virgin materials and increased end-of-life reuse and recycling.
The insulation and roofing company’s newly set environmental targets represent their third set of long-term goals. Owens Corning was ranked No. 1 on Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s Best Corporate Citizens list for 2019.
Additionally, Owens Corning became the first U.S. industrial company to issue a green bond. In August, the company issued a $450 million bond to fund their work in renewable energy, energy efficiency and eco-efficient and circular economy adapted products, production technologies and processes.
