Target achieves 500 rooftop solar projects ahead of schedule

Target announced Nov. 17 that it reached its goal to have 500 rooftop solar systems across its locations by 2020 with the completion of a 240 MW installation on the roof of the Napa, Calif., retail store.

The retail giant claims that each rooftop solar project it has installed generates enough energy to offset between 15 and 40% of a property’s energy needs. Target first made the commitment to install 500 rooftop solar projects in 2015 and has achieved that goal a year ahead of schedule.

Last summer, the company also committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and its already a quarter of the way toward that goal.

“At Target, we’re committed to making our operations even more sustainable to create a better future for our guests, team members and the planet,” John Leisen, VP of Property Management at Target, said in a statement. “Ambitious energy goals have helped us accelerate our progress and reach major milestones. And we’ll continue to invest in technologies, partners and resources to help us achieve even more.”

Target was recognized for holding the number one spot for on-site solar installations in 2016, 2017 and 2018 by the Solar Energy Industries Association.
