Habitat for Humanity partners with utility on Solar Share program
Ten low-income families in Kentucky will be receiving a subscription to the local utility’s Solar Share program through the Kentucky Habitat for Humanity, offsetting a portion of each family’s utility bill for 25 years.
The KYHFH subscribed to 180 shares in LG&E and KU’s Solar Share program and is able to transfer those monthly shares to another recipient through a new gifting option approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commissions in 2019. KYHFH and Habitat affiliates across the state hope to offset up to 30% of each monthly energy bill.
“Growing the use of renewable energy while simultaneously lowering utility costs for low-income homeowners is a great achievement,” Rob Locke, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville, said in a statement. “This gift will empower Amber and her family [the first identified homeowner recipient] to use the power of home to build strength, stability and self-reliance.”
Through Habitat for Humanity’s subscription to the program, LG&E and KU’s reached full subscription of the second 500 kW section of their Solar Share facility. The utilities’ will now be able to move forward with the construction of the next 1,400-panel array at their Solar Share site in Simpsonville, Ky., in 2020.
