Visa achieves 2020 goal of 100% RE

Visa has successfully reached its goal to use 100% renewable electricity across its 131 offices in 76 countries and four global processing centers, just in time for its 2020 target.

The company first set its target for 100% renewable energy in 2018 and began adding projects including solar and wind to its portfolio. The achievement of 100% renewables will allow Visa to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity it consumes (Scope 2), thus reducing the emissions from all facilities and data centers by almost 90% against a 2014 baseline.

“With the world’s growing focus on the global challenges of climate change, we recognize and understand the need to play a leadership role in helping build a more sustainable future,” Douglas Sabo, vice president and head of corporate responsibility and sustainability at Visa Inc., said in a statement. “For Visa, this achievement shows how we are dedicated to being a force for good and leading the way in sustainable business practices.”

Over the past several years Visa enrolled in renewable energy electricity programs offered Total Energy in the U.K., Xcel Energy in Colorado, Austin Energy in Texas and Peninsula Clean Energy in the San Francisco Bay Area, four regions with facilities that account for 80% of its global electricity use.

Visa has previously joined RE100, the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance and signed the Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles. Additionally, the company has implemented energy efficiency measures at its global locations, including LEED-based building design and operations, lighting and HVAC upgrades, and an efficient electronics policy that mandates at least 90% of new electronics in its largest corporate campus offices meet either ENERGY STAR or EPEAT certification standards.
