Daimler enters agreement for 100% RE to power German plants

Daimler, the German auto manufacturing corporation that includes Mercedes-Benz, will have 100% of its demand for its German production sites covered with a combination of solar, wind and hydroelectric power.

A new deal agreeing that Daimler sites will continue to be powered from German solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants stipulates that renewable energy provider Statkraft will generate the remaining amount to reach Daimler’s energy consumption from its own hydropower plants.

This system, implemented by Enovos, ensures that just the right amount of power is generated to cover Daimler’s needs based on how much it consumes. All parties have agreed not to disclose contractual details.

“To generate green electricity exactly when it is needed is a major challenge that can only be met with considerable flexibility in generation,” Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, CEO of Statkraft, said in a statement. “Our flexible hydropower plants complement the fluctuating power generation from wind and solar so that a 100% renewable power supply is guaranteed at all times. We are proud to offer this innovative concept to an outstanding industrial company – a solution that will reduce CO2 emissions and enable Daimler to achieve their climate goals.”

Enovos will be responsible for managing all aspects of the energy management process, including physical delivery, balancing group management, billing, grid usage, consumption forecasts and hedging of green electricity quantities.

Mercedes-Benz Cars plants in Germany have previously received power from German wind farms under an agreement between Daimler, Enovos, and Statkraft in 2018. The Renewable Energy Sources Act guaranteed wind farms a fixed subsidized remuneration for the electricity generated and will expire in 2021. These wind farms will continue to be operational and provide power to Daimler sites through PPAs.

Additionally, the solar used to power these sites are subsidy-free and the hydropower plants complement Germany’s comprehensive green power package.
