Tempur Sealy invests in solar power for manufacturing facility
Tempur Sealy International announced Feb. 10 that its largest mattress manufacturing facility, located in Albuquerque, N.M., will be receiving locally-generated renewable energy that will reduce the amount of electricity purchased from the public utility by approximately 2 million kWh.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year through an investment from Tempur Sealy.
The mattress company’s facility in Duffield, Va., also has achieved the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry by reducing its energy intensity by nearly 40%, which allowed it to reduce over 3,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
"These renewable energy projects are exciting additions to our other environmental initiatives here at Tempur Sealy," Scott Thompson, Tempur Sealy International, Inc. Chairman and CEO, said in a statement. "This reduction in our carbon footprint from the solar energy initiative alone equates to powering all mattress assembly lines at our largest facility, and at the same time, allows us to improve the cost effectiveness of our operations."
Additionally, Tempur Sealy issued its first Corporate Social Values Report earlier this year, which includes opportunities to expand environmental initiatives and integrating solar power into its operations.
