EY commits to carbon neutrality by the end of 2020
Ernst & Young (EY) will be carbon neutral by the end of 2020, according to an announcement made Jan. 30.
The professional services firm, based in London, plans to achieve this goal be reducing and offsetting their carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits. This makes them the first Big Four organization (a group of accounting firms that includes Deloitte, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers) to announce a global carbon neutrality goal.
In order to reduce their emissions EY plans to focus on reducing travel emissions, sustainable procurement practices and purchasing renewable energy to directly power their offices.
“Protecting the planet for future generations is an important issue for EY people and becoming carbon neutral this year is a real step forward on the EY sustainability journey,” Carmine Di Sibio, EY Global Chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “As an organization that spans more than 150 countries, with varying views and ambitions on climate change, we recognize this is no easy feat. However, with over 284,000 EY people who are dedicated to our purpose of building a better working world, EY has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take immediate action to create sustainable, inclusive growth for generations to come.”
The announcement follows their commitment in April 2019 to power their U.S. operations with 100% renewable energy in 2020 following their entry into a VPPA that financed two wind farms in Texas. Between FY17 and FY19, EY successfully decreased emissions at their offices by 11%.
