Southern California town plans 6,500 streetlight LED retrofit
The City of Menifee, Calif., has begun work on an LED retrofit of over 6,500 streetlights in a project that is expected to save the city approximately $9.5 million over 20 years.
The city will take over operations and maintenance of the energy efficient LED fixtures through the Western Riverside Council of Governments’ Regional Streetlight Program, which currently has 11 participating jurisdictions. Across all these jurisdictions, the program expects to retrofit nearly 53,000 streetlights and create regional savings of approximately $70 million over 20 years.
The project is expected to be implemented in four phases and be completed in the summer.
“We are excited to begin upgrading our existing streetlights from sodium lamps to more efficient LED fixtures,” Dean Dienes, Councilmember District 4, said in a statement.
The new LED lights will have a longer lifespan than the current sodium lamps and require less maintenance. Additionally, they will reduce light pollution and improve color perception for residents.
