Whirlpool cuts emissions by 18%
Whirlpool Corporation has reduced their absolute plant emissions by 18% since 2016, their lowest levels in a decade, since adopting efficiency and renewable energy strategies.
The appliance manufacturer released their 2019 Sustainability Report outlining their new commitments in line with the UN Global Compact and Science-Based Carbon Emissions Goals. This year, SBTi approved their greenhouse gas emissions targets, including reducing emissions from their products in use by 20% before 2030 and emissions from their plants by 50% before 2030.
For renewable energy, Whirlpool has four plants that source 20% of their electricity from on-site wind turbines. Globally, solar panels have been installed at international sites to reduce the emissions used there as well.
“Whirlpool Corporation’s operational excellence in manufacturing has allowed us to accelerate our journey, recommit to more aggressive goals and hold ourselves accountable to the commitments we make to the environment, to our employees, and our stakeholders,” Ron Voglewede, Whirlpool Corporation’s director of global sustainability, said in a statement. “Among last year’s accomplishments, we established a global dedicated team that drives our responsible sourcing program, achieved a record of reduction in emissions, energy, and water at our plants, and set a record at on-site renewable usage. We all see this as one goal – to make the world a better place.”
Whirlpool cut their energy consumption from 8.7 million gigajoules in 2016 to 7.85 million gigajoules in 2019. They also cut energy intensity by 7% from 2016 to 2019.
