Gerdau Steel plans 80 MW BTM solar facility
Gerdau Long Steel North America announced June 2 that they have entered into a 20-year PPA for one of the country’s largest behind-the-meter solar facilities.
The steel manufacturer completed the agreement with 174 Power Global for the 80 MW solar project, which is located adjacent to their Midlothian Steel Mill in Midlothian, Texas and comprises more than 231,000 solar panels. The behind-the-meter system will provide power directly to the steel mill and will offset the emissions equivalent to more than 13,000 average Texas households.
“Gerdau has a culture of sustainability,” Gerdau Long Steel North America President Chia Yuan Wang said in a statement. “The products from our Midlothian facility are already made from 100% recycled scrap metal. Developing and utilizing green energy is an innovative way to further enhance our environmental contributions.”
The solar facility is expected to begin construction by the end of 2020 and be completed by the end of 2021.
