Fredericksburg Nationals plans solar-powered LED for stadium parking lot
The Fredericksburg Nationals stadium in Fredericksburg, Va., contracted solar-powered LED lights that will sit atop 30 lamp poles that will illuminate the parking lot once the stadium opens.
The owners of the team and stadium, the Silber family, negotiated a deal with the lights supplier, Solar Power Electric Co., to receive the lighting at a discounted price in return for sending the products unassembled, The Free Lance-Star reported.
Each pole in the parking lot will have a 300-watt solar panel with two batteries connected to store enough surplus electricity for up to five days. The parking lot lights cost the stadium $225,000 and allowed the owners to receive a tax credit for a portion of their investment.
The Silber family is taking steps, the LED parking lot lamps included, to pursue LEED certification for the stadium. When the family first started pursuing the construction of the baseball stadium in Fredericksburg, they started meeting with the city’s Clean & Green Commission to brainstorm how it could become a leader in clean energy and sustainability.
Each pole unit will be self-contained, but it was reported that they could eventually receive technology that would connect them to the Dominion Energy power grid.
