IKEA pursues self-contained solar plus battery system in Australia
In pursuit of their goal to power all operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, IKEA announced that they are pursuing a self-assembled rooftop solar project on one of its Australian megastores.
The Swedish-furniture company, who also now offers solar power equipment for sale online, plans to combine solar and battery in the project and use that energy to power the store and even feed excess power back into the grid, Bloomberg reported.
Solar panels will be installed across the entirety of the rooftop and the store’s purpose-built car parks.
“This is about utilizing our commercial buildings to be a part of producing clean energy in the community,” Jan Gardberg, Ikea Australia chief executive officer, told the publication. “We’re exploring what this could mean in the future -- that this is ‘Energy by Ikea.’ So it’s basically that we will also become an energy production company.”
The pilot project for this endeavor will be located at one of the ten Australia IKEA stores, to take advantage of the abundant sunshine, in collaboration with the state government in the region of the chosen store.
