P&G commits to being carbon neutral for the entire decade
The Procter & Gamble Company committed July 16 to be carbon neutral for the decade by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and purchasing 100% renewable electricity for all manufacturing sites by 2030.
The consumer goods corporation estimates that they will need to balance around 30 million metric tons of carbon between 2020 and 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality during this decade, while they are on track to achieve their 2030 emissions and renewable electricity goals. They intend to increase the renewable energy in their portfolio by pursuing new wind, solar and geothermal projects.
"Climate change is happening, and action is needed now,” David Taylor, P&G Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement. “By reducing our carbon footprint and investing in natural climate solutions, we will be carbon neutral for the decade across our operations and help protect vulnerable ecosystems and communities around the world.”
P&G will also begin partnering with Conservation International and World Wildlife Fund on carbon sequestration projects in the Philippines, Brazil, Northern California and Germany.
The company will also be increasingly involved with reducing the carbon emissions associated with their products’ use going forward. P&G estimates that up to 85% of their Scope 3 emissions are from consumer use of their products.
