Switch breaks ground on massive Nevada solar+battery project
Switch broke ground this week on three solar energy and battery projects in Nevada in the next phase of their Gigawatt 1 project, the first phase of which will generate a total of 555 MW of solar power and 800 MW of battery storage.
The technology infrastructure corporation teamed up with Capital Dynamics on this project to develop one of the largest solar footprint and battery storage projects in the technology industry. The team will be investing $1.3 billion into this initiative to expand Nevada’s renewable energy capacity.
Besides the original Townsite development, the projects that just broke ground are located in Clark and Storey counties; the latter one will be the largest behind-the-meter solar project in the world with a generating capacity of 127 MW and battery storage system capable of 240 MWh.
The project is expected to use thousands of solar panels made by First Solar using Tesla Megapack for the battery storage technology. Additionally, the integrator of the Gigawatt 1 project is Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses, who will use the Tesla Megapack.
“With today’s announcement Rob Roy’s Gigawatt Nevada now has four solar with battery storage projects in the state creating nearly 1 gigawatt of energy solutions,” Adam Kramer, Switch EVP of Strategy, said in a statement. “This project also ensures Switch’s power costs will remain in the 5 cent a KWh range and Switch clients will continue to enjoy low-cost, 100% renewable power for decades to come.”
